Only few months after winning the Toulon Tournament 2016, Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse have been handed their first England-call up as they were named in the Three Lions squad for the upcoming games against Germany (22 March) and Lithuania (26 mars).
The England head coach Gareth Southgate, who won the Toulon Tournament in the last summer with the Southampton duo, has explained his decision to select both players. “They are players we’ve worked with before and players who are in excellent form with their club. They both performed very well in a pressured environment of a cup final with Southampton. […] They’re two that we wanted to introduce to the senior environment and see how they get on”, Southgate said about the two players.
The 22-year-old midfielder James Ward-Prowse has netted 2 goals and delivered 4 assists in 20 Premier League games this season while the 23-year-old winger Nathan Redmond has scored 5 goals and delivered 1 assist in 25 league games until now.
