Shihao Wei continues his upward trajectory

The Chinese Super League is growing thanks to the arrival of high-profile foreign stars but some Chinese youngsters like Shihao Wei (who played the Toulon Tournament 2015) are here to remember that there are some talented local players too.

After four years spent in Portugal (notably at Boavista), the 22-year-old attacking midfielder came back to his native country during the last winter transfer window as he joined on loan Shanghai SIPG, then coached by André Villas-Boas, the former Chelsea coach.

During his loan at Shanghai, Wei has played 14 league games and netted 3 goals. That has been enough to convince Marcelo Lippi, the China head coach, to select Wei for the East Asian Cup played on December.

Wei made the most of this opportunity as he earned his 3 first international caps with China and has also scored his first 2 goals on the international scene (against South Korea and North Korea).

“I’m very happy to have Mr. Lippi's trust. He brought a lot of confidence out of me. He told me that I was a very skilful player and I should be able to possess the ball and keep possession of the ball”, said Wei to the AFC website.

Following his convincing performances with the Chinese national team, Wei has joined on a permanent deal Beijing Guoan where he will continue his development alongside famous players like the Brazil international Renato Augusto.
