Gibran Lajud, from joblessness to the Mexico senior national team

The Gibran Lajud’s story demonstrates that there is more than one path to success. The Mexican keeper, who took part in the Toulon Tournament three times in 2013, 2015 and 2016, has endured some difficult moments in his career before to live an astonishing rise.

May 2013 : during his first participation at the Toulon Tournament, Lajud was a promising goalkeeper under contract with Cruz Azul and regularly selected to represent Mexico in the youth categories. December 2013 : he faced a major setback as Cruz Azul refused to renew his contract.

Eventually, after spending several months as a free agent, Tijuana gave him a chance to get back on track during the summer 2014 by offering him a contract in order to fill the second-choice goalkeeper spot. At that moment, the Mexico senior national was a distant dream as the City of Mexico-born has spent two complete years on the Tijuana bench. However, in 2017, Lajud has reversed the trend and forced his way into the Xolos starting XI. Since that, he has enjoyed an astonishing rise.

Recently, the 24-year-old Mexican goalkeeper made Liga MX history after spending 516 minutes without conceding a goal. Meanwhile, Lajud has earned his first ever Mexico call-up on January for the friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Four years ago, he was thinking about retiring from football…
