Pour cette première affiche du groupe C, l’Irlande a fait forte impression en s’imposant 4-1 face à la Chine. L’entame tonitruante des Irlandais avec deux buts en cinq minutes a fait très mal à leur adversaire. Les Chinois emmenés par Guus Hiddink ont réduit le score juste avant la demi-heure de jeu cependant l’Irlande est parvenue à tuer la rencontre avec un doublé sur pénalty d’Adam Idah en seconde période.
