Après l’Euro, la Copa America ainsi que la Gold Cup qui se déroule actuellement, place à une nouvelle compétition internationale d’envergure : les Jeux Olympiques. Le tournoi de football des JO va se dérouler du 22 juillet au 7 août.

- Six arbitres passés par le Tournoi Maurice Revello prendront part aux Jeux Olympiques. Artur Soares Dias (Portugal - 2013) et Georgi Kabakov (Bulgarie - 2014) vont officier en tant qu’arbitres centraux tandis qu’Adil Zourak (Maroc - 2015), Abdulla Al-Marri (Qatar - 2014), Erick Miranda (Mexique - 2016) et Benoît Millot (France - 2016) seront en charge du VAR.
- Tokyo a déjà organisé les JO par le passé, en 1964. Cette année-là, la Hongrie a remporté le tournoi de football aux dépens de la Tchécoslovaquie (2-1 en finale)
- Le Brésil est le tenant du titre. La Seleçao avait remporté le tournoi olympique de football en 2016 en venant à bout de l’Allemagne (1-1, 5-4 pen). De nombreux joueurs passés par le Tournoi Maurice Revello tels que Marquinhos ou encore Luan avaient joué un rôle majeur dans ce titre.
