Maurice Revello Tournament Team of the Month for September

At the end of each month, we put together a list of players who have passed through the Maurice Revello Tournament and who have shone for their clubs or their national teams. Second part of the 2021-2022 season, with the team of September.

Raul Gudino (Chivas)

In four league games this month, the Mexican international (5 caps) has kept three clean sheets. The former FC Porto goalkeeper's superb 'Clásico Nacional' performance against league leaders Club America earned him praise from the local media.

Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

In the space of a month, the versatile Portuguese international (29 caps, 5 goals) has played seven games in all competitions for Manchester City and Portugal. Cancelo has provided assists against Chelsea (1-0) in the Premier League and Azerbaijan (3-0) in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. He also scored against RB Leipzig (6-3) in the Champions League!

Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli)

Serie A leaders Napoli have made a perfect start to the season with seven wins in as many league games played. The Neapolitans also have the best defence in Serie A (only three goals conceded): a performance to which the Senegalese international (47 caps) has greatly contributed. The 30-year-old defender even scored two league goals in September: against Juventus (2-1) and Udinese (4-0).

Takehiro Tomiyasu (Arsenal)

After a poor start to the season, Arsenal have bounced back by winning all their games in September. This good period coincided with the inclusion of Tomiyasu in the Gunners' starting line-up. The 22-year-old defender, signed from Bologna for 20m€ in the summer, has brought stability to a defence that sorely needed it. "I'm impressed with how quickly he has settled in and integrated here, everyone loves him. He is always 100% dedicated and focused," said coach Mikel Arteta of the Japanese.

Douglas Santos (Zenit)

Since his arrival in 2019 at Zenit, the Brazilian left-back has already added to his list of trophies two Russian championship titles. The two-time winner of the Maurice Revello Tournament (2013 & 2014) is also in fine form on a personal level, with an excellent month of September in which he provided two assists.

Joao Mario (Benfica)

The 28-year-old midfielder, who was a Sporting Portugal academy player and returned to his hometown club on loan last season, surprised everyone this summer by joining... Benfica, Sporting's sworn enemy!
It was a surprising choice on paper, but one that has paid off on a personal level: Joao Mario seems to have found his best form at Benfica. The 28-year-old midfielder has been at his best this month, with two assists for the Portuguese national team (against Ireland and Qatar) and a league goal against Vitoria (3-1).

Jack Grealish (Manchester City)

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder became the most expensive player in English football history this summer following his record-breaking transfer to Manchester City and is now gradually gaining in stature. The Maurice Revello Tournament 2016 winner scored for England against Hungary (4-0) in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. He also produced a classy performance in the Champions League against RB Leipzig (6-3) with a goal and an assist.

Moses Simon (Nantes)

After a difficult 2020-2021 season, FC Nantes seems to be moving forward again since the beginning of the current season. A revival symbolised in particular by Simon. The twirling Nigerian winger has again shown the extent of his talent in September: two assists against Angers (4-1) and a (very) nice goal against Reims (3-1).

Steven Berghuis (Ajax)

Like Joao Mario, the Dutch international (30 caps, 2 goals) was in the news this summer after deciding to leave Feyenoord to join the enemy: Ajax Amsterdam. His month of September was simply stratospheric: 4 goals and 6 assists in 6 games with Ajax last month. With goals in the Champions League against Sporting Portugal (5-1) and Besiktas (2-0).

Sébastien Haller (Ajax)

If Steven Berghuis has been in sensational form for Ajax, what about his teammate Sebastien Haller? The Maurice Revello Tournament 2014 runner-up has been on fire, scoring 7 goals in 6 games for Ajax in September. His four-goal game in the Champions League against Sporting Portugal (5-1) will remain in the memory!
The 27-year-old striker also scored a brace with the Ivory Coast national team against Cameroon (2-1) in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)

The Portuguese star is continuing to build on his reputation with goals and sensational performances. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner began September with a brace against Ireland (2-1) in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. The two goals made him the record holder for the number of goals scored for a national team: 111 in 180 appearances for Portugal. No footballer in history has achieved such a feat with his national team.

At the same time, the Maurice Revello Tournament 2003 winner celebrated his return to Manchester United in the best possible way: five goals in as many games played in September with the Manchester club.
