Edgar Borges (headcoach Portugal) : "Toulon Tournament, a competitive reference"
This test is one of the competitive references of our training process. It is always an important moment because it is the realization of another stage of our planning and we want to consolidate the prestige of the national youth teams have managed to raise in recent years. We are honored by another invitation to participate in this tournament.
How special is this tournament ?
Fundamentally, I have to say two important things. The quality of opposition and adversity that provoke us. It is good to note that generally the choice of teams swings in the logic of most important competition of the training process (Olympic Games or World Championship U-20). On the other hand, we have the opportunity to confront with different footballing cultures. It is always important we measure forces with teams from other confederations.
How was your first participation in the tournament as a coach (in 2013) ?
It was extremely rewarding. Of course we would like to have gone further (Portugal lost 2-1 against France in the game for the allocation of 3 and 4 seats). It was frustrating we could not get a place on the podium but at least the team won more potential, which leaves us somehow quieter. We did our best, we have done more for quality but the winner was the team that was more consistent and balanced during the tournament.
