Japan clinch their first ever AFC U19 Championship title
After losing six finals, Japan have finally clinched their first ever AFC U19 Championship title as they beat Saudi Arabia (0-0, 5-3 pen) on this Sunday. During 120 minutes, neither side could find the breakthrough despite some opportunities for both teams. Saudi Arabia were close to break the deadlock during the first half but the Ayman Al Khulaif’s effort was deflected onto the post by Ryosuke Kojima.
The game went into the penalty shootout : Japan were the most accurate team as they converted all their spot kicks and Koki Ogawa netted the deciding penalty. The young Samurai Blue were impressive during this tournament with 13 goals netted in 6 games and no goal conceded in the whole competition.
Saudi Arabia can console themselves as they have already booked a place for the next World Cup U20 which will be held in South Korea from 20 May to 11 June 2017
