Japan win, a crazy game between Mexico and Denmark... Group B - Matchday 1 recap
The opening day for group B of the 2025 Maurice Revello Tournament took place today at Stade Parsemain in Fos-sur-Mer.
In the first encounter, Japan secured a 2–0 victory over Congo. The first half was evenly contested, with both teams displaying intensity but failing to break the deadlock. Congo had a goal disallowed for offside in the 23rd minute. Japan broke the stalemate in the 56th minute when Soma Kanda scored following a defensive error. Just two minutes later, Kanda doubled the lead, capitalizing on a precise pass from Hitatsugu Ishii. Despite Congo's efforts, Japan maintained their advantage to claim the win.
The second match saw Denmark and Mexico play to a thrilling 3–3 draw, with Denmark prevailing 5–4 in the penalty shootout. Denmark took an early lead through Vester in the 11th minute, but Mexico equalized just before halftime via Virgen. The second half was a rollercoaster, with Denmark's Rohd scoring twice and Mexico responding through Uribe and a stoppage-time goal by Jimenez. In the ensuing shootout, Denmark held their nerve to secure the additional point.
These results place Japan at the top of Group B, with Denmark close behind. The next round of matches will see Mexico face Japan and Denmark take on Congo at the Parc des Sports in Avignon on June 7.
